Horrifying in Hindsight
Schleiermacher:
Judaism is long since a dead religion, and those who at present still bear its colors are actually sitting and mourning beside the undecaying mummy and weeping over its demise and its sad legacy.
Sentences like that make it hard to confine criticism to the Nazis.
2 Comments:
Was anyone confining their criticism to the Nazis? Nobody would seriously suggest that the pathologies that informed the Nazi movement just sprang up out of nowhere.
But anti-Semitism, so virulent all over Europe, only manifested itself in such horror in Germany, at a specific time.
It's just a tough thread to follow through the centuries. :dunno:
