A note to all writicians

Dear Writers, Editors, etc.:

When referring to Alexis de Tocqueville by last name only, one should write "Tocqueville," not "de Tocqueville." This stems from his position as a French nobleman. In contrast, Charles De Gaulle should be referred to as "De Gaulle." Yes, the rule is somewhat arbitrary and confusing, but simple memorization of these two examples will cover 99% of the application. You are being paid to write, edit, etc., so do it correctly.
