WWII in fact was triggered by Germany, not Europe, and a large majority of the German people were unaware of the genocide that was taking place.
Perhaps before you make such an unfounded political opinion, you should consider the social and economic circumstances of the time, although Hitler was a dictator and a sadist, he also provided the German people with hope in the form of reinstating their national pride.
The US is one of the only westen countries that still promotes capital punishment and the hypocritical stance on human rights is infuriating (Gunatanamo Bay anyone? Anti-Terrorism legislation?) The amount of military dicatorships the US has supported over the past century all in the name of 'democracy' is atorcious and its unileralist stance in diplomacy, its disregard for the UN has been one of the most undermining and backwards thinking foreign policies in the history of foreign policy.
And now, thanks to the greed of US corporations and the free-market capitalist system, the world is on the brink of major, polarising recession, perhaps few more regulations in your economic system could have prevented this.
So yes, you do need to earn Europe's respect. And Barack Obama is the most exciting thing that has happened to US politics and finally, the US can regain some of the respect it used to uphold in the international community.

I was hoping we'd elect another Bush so that Europe would keep hating us. I was starting to enjoy watching the American Empire run aground. I'm worried that Obama is smart enough to get the Empire rolling again with European help.
Yeah we need European help.
